Living the Gift: Pornography

St. Anthony Parish Adult Formation Series, 2019-2020

This series of presentations will help you understand and appreciate the Catholic Church’s beautiful teachings on love, sex, and marriage. In addition to showing how natural law, social science, and personal stories can help us better understand those teachings, the series will address confusions about marriage and sexuality in our culture today. The reading list was designed for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia by CanaVox, an international, ecumenical marriage movement supported by the Witherspoon Institute. There are short readings and/or videos available below. Participants will get more out of the seminar if they read/watch this material in advance of the meeting. The series will be led by Nathan and Elizabeth Schlueter. Nathan is a professor of philosophy and religion at Hillsdale College and Elizabeth is the Michigan state director for CanaVox. They have been married for 22 years and have nine children. All are welcome, Catholic or non-Catholic. We will meet at 8:00 p.m. in the parish hall.

March 3: Pornography

Main Readings/Videos:

Morgan Bennett, “The New Narcotic” (Documents the addictive effects of pornography on the brain)

Matt Fradd, Foreword, “Bought with a Price” pp. 9-13

In the pornography session, participants tackle this topic by studying a variety of materials that relate to the growing epidemic of pornography, which plagues our modern culture. The readings and videos cover many different perspectives that seek to explain:

1) What is happening in the culture today;

2) Why pornography is problematic, particularly how it hurts men, women, children and relationships; and

3) What can be done to alleviate this tremendous problem.

The distinctively Catholic perspective deepens the discussion by demonstrating how pornography damages not only individuals, families, and the social order, but especially our relationship with God. The statement that the willing use of pornography is a mortal sin requiring the sacrament of reconciliation opens the way to understanding more fully the nature of the sin and the grace available, and all that is at stake in the epidemic.
